Eyeless in Gaza

Overheard at the hairdressing salon today:

“God, I hate Nickelback!”

“Yeah, me too.”

“They give Canada a bad reputation, eh?”

“Yeah. Like Pamela Anderson.”

“But there’s always Michael Fox, eh?”

  • I love Michael J Fox!

I’ve a bit of a soft spot for him myself. It was such a surreal conversation, though. I left the salon thinking I gotta get out more often!

  • I actually like Nickelback’s music and I love Michael J. Fox. Pam Anderson…meh….

I have to say that I’ve never heard Nickelback, but they seem to be quite popular. Not sure why these two stylists – they were young – had such a hate on for them.

Yes, but y’all can also boast:

    Rush

    The Guess Who

    Rick Moranis

    Bryan Adams

    Jim Carrey

    Wayne Gretzky

    Terry Gilliam

Samuel Goldwyn (yes, the MGM guy)

    Brenden Fraser

    Glenn Ford

    Keanu Reeves

    Tommy Chong

This is impressive and could go on and on!

Wow, I’m impressed! You really know your Canadiana. I’m told half the teeny-boppers (boy, that phrase really, really dates me!) on tv nowadays, in 90210, Gossip Girl, Privilege, Smallville and all the other teen dramas, are from Canada, too. I’m just wondering why these, or Nickelback, or even Michael J. Fox should affect Canada’s reputation, one way or another. Guess it got lost in translation somewhere along the way.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ve been snooping around here and I really like your blog.

I think I like your point best here, in reply to Jan. Why celebrities and entertainers should affect Canada’s rep at all. I grew up in LA and loved when I came here to Hawaii and met people who were not AS celebrity driven.

All that being said, maybe Canada has better arts programs in the schools and that equates to better young talent.

Hey, Pseudo. Thanks for stopping by. Alas, I wish your last comment was true. Education is a provincial issue in Canada, and it really is up to the individual provincial governments of the day whether arts programs live or die. Here in Ontario, we endured swingeing cuts to music and library programs during the last, unlamented Conservative government, and they still have not recovered to any worthwhile degree. And, to be honest, I’m not so sure about these young Canadian pop tarts being talented; skinny and pretty, maybe, but talented? Not so much.

    And Donald Sutherland,,,,,hummina, hummina.
    XO
    WWW
Yeah, Kiefer’s Dad now but I remember when…

Age, schmage. He’s still more hummina hummina than Kiefer will ever be. Sexy is all in the eye of the beholder. For me, the all-time, outright sexiest movie star ever has always been Brian Dennehy. When we were in NYC a year ago, we saw him and Christopher Plummer (whaddayouknow, another dishy Canadian!) in Inherit the Wind on Broadway. Best. Playgoing. Experience. Ever. (Although said Plummer in King Lear at Stratford in ‘02 was a close second …)

  • Alan says:

Okay…so Nickelback kinda sucks…but you gave us Bryan Adams! :-)

And we’d like him back, please. But you can keep Celine Dion! ;o

  • garfer says:

Joni (big teeth) Mitchell and Neil Young were ace.

Unfortunately they cannot compensate for the ghastly Celine Dion and Brian (crater face) Adams.

I’m with you on Joni, Neil, and Celine. I’m going to let you and Alan fight it out on Craterface.

OMG…i thought i was the only one in the world that thought Brian Dennehy was sexy. And i’m very impressed with all the people on here who know their Canadiana. And personally, i like Bryan Adams AND Nickleback, and Neil Young…and oddly, the lesser known Joni Mitchell stuff, which surprises even me.
